ACADEMICS

Academics

Curriculum

Abeka and Bob Jones materials are used for most core subjects to provide an academically challenging, well-balanced, Christ-centered program in all grades.  Online programs are used for electives and specialized blended learning situations, and our Learning Resource Center provides reading intervention in 4th-12th grades.

Elementary School (K5 – 5th)

K5-5th grades are designed to impart knowledge and develop skills in Bible, English, spelling, reading, math, science, history, poetry, penmanship, physical education, computer and library skills, and fine arts. Our reading program is phonics based. The Bible is taught every day and a regular chapel program emphasizes personal salvation, patriotism, Bible knowledge, character development, etc.

Middle School (6th - 8th) & High School (9th - 12th)

At Calvary Christian School (CCS), school life is carefully designed and managed to insure maximum development of all academic, social, spiritual, and physical skills necessary for success in life and vocational endeavors. The spirit is sweet, academics are excellent, the environment is safe, the teachers are loving, students learn and have fun, and the Lord is honored!

Four courses of senior high study are available that lead to the following diplomas:

  • College Prep with Honors: College prep track student completing at least 7 honors classes from grades 9-12 while maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • College Prep Diploma: Satisfies the strict University of North Carolina requirements.
  • General Diploma: Satisfies requirements for entrance into Christian or community colleges.
  • Vocational Track Diploma: For students with certain disabilities. May satisfy requirements for provisional entrance into some fields of study in community colleges.

Accelerated Math Program: Capable students will be invited to shift to an accelerated math track at the beginning of 9th and 10th grades. The goal for this track is to provide our students with the highest level of math possible, including AP Calculus in 12th grade.

Honors Classes: Honors classes offer the highest level of academic challenge in designated classes to provide the best college preparation. Students desiring this more challenging course of study will be invited to shift to an academically more rigorous "Honors Option" in any approved 9th-12th grade subject. (English, Biology, Chemistry, Science & Origins, US History, World History, Gov’t/Economics, Worldviews, Spanish, Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, and Physics).

Middle School/High School Math: CCS uses the Abeka math curriculum for regular 6th-12th grade math classes. Struggling and “high-flying” students are taught math using the blended learning approach of the Edgenuity Online Math Curriculum. Edgenuity provides these students with 24/7 instructional support to help struggling students master difficult concepts. It also provides more capable and motivated students (“high-flyers”) the opportunity to accelerate beyond their normal grade level and prepare for higher level high school math (AP Calculus, etc.).

8th-12th Grade Social Studies: A growing number of states and school districts are requiring online coursework for high school graduation to prepare students for the 21st century career and college learning environment. In keeping with this national trend, our students take four online social studies courses in a blended learning environment using Ignitia, an online learning management system built exclusively for Christian schools.

Elective Courses: Elective courses are offered during or after school, or during the summer. Many online electives are available through our Edgenuity and Ignitia online content providers. Available electives include Career & Technical Education (CTE) and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses, and more.

Advanced Discipleship Classes: “Worldviews” and “Science & Origins” are full-credit required high school courses that train our juniors and seniors to use science, logic, and Biblical apologetics to stand for Christ in a culture that is hostile to our faith. (CLICK HERE for details about these two classes.)

American Christian Honor Society (ACHS): Eligible students are inducted into the CCS chapter of the ACHS in the spring of their sophomore year on the basis of Christian testimony, scholarship, character, service, and leadership.

Learning Disabilities

CCS is equipped to help children with certain learning disabilities or who are somewhat deficient academically. Using limited intervention, accommodation and modification strategies, we are able to help many children with academic deficiencies gain the skills needed for success.

  • Help Classes: Teacher-led afterschool help classes are offered free of charge to help struggling students.
  • Learning Resource Center (LRC): The LRC employs multiple resources to provide reading and other types of intervention designed to help struggling students realize success in school. These resources include tools and techniques from the Barton Reading Program, Reading Horizons, Search & Teach, National Institute for Learning Development, and other programs to identify and remediate reading deficiencies as early as kindergarten.
  • Dyslexia Reading Remediation: Reading remediation is provided through the Reading Horizons Elevate and the Barton Reading programs for students with dyslexia. Both programs are based on the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching reading — a method specifically designed for students with dyslexia. These are systematic, multi-sensory programs that have been proven to help students with dyslexia improve their reading skills.
  • K5-1st Grade Reading Intervention: We offer early intervention for kindergarten and first-grade students through the Search & Teach program developed by Dr. Rosa Hagin. This program scans students in areas of visual and auditory perception — abilities needed for learning to read. Search & Teach works to identify and strengthen perceptual weaknesses.
  • Resource Math and Reading Classes: We offer math and reading classes for students in upper elementary through high school who are working below grade level. Beginning at their current level of ability, students work at an aggressive pace until caught up to grade level.
  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD): We offer intervention for students who exhibit weak working memory, and/or deficits in the ability to sustain attention and self-regulate.
